Where did you come from? Okay, clearly you’re from KSA, but not sure how you made your way to my corner of the Interwebs. Unless you’re from Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Jeddah Spider Team.
That’s right – Saudi Arabia has jiu jitsu! And in fact, I found out that on the Jeddah Spider team, they allow women. Well, sort of. Last I heard, there was a purple belt doing jiu jitsu on one of the compounds, and on the compound, foreign women were welcomed!
There are a few more clubs, but honestly, I couldn’t find ones whose blogs/websites had been updated in the past year or two. Ah well.
Hey – if you’re one of the visitors from Saudi Arabia, say hello! Introduce yourself! How did you find me and do you do jiu jitsu?
Is this a recent phenomenon?
It is! For some reason in the last month KSA has popped up several times!
I grew up in Saudi Arabia (1982-1999) on an american compound. It was back before bjj made it’s global trek, but we had all sorts of martial arts offered (karate, tkd, judo, aikido, and I’m sure there were others). I wish we’d had bjj. Would have been great to have started at 4 rather than 28!
Awesome that you started doing it, though! Where do you do it now?
I trained in Phoenix for several years and I recently moved to baltimore. I’m still looking for the right place to train and my time of the mats is killing me!
Love your blog by the way! It’s great to read about the victories and struggles of a fellow blue belt.
Thank you so much! Good luck to you – I hope you find a new home soon!
ABQAIQ COMPOUND BJJ. I am belted purple under Mario Aiello/Brian Miller. Class Wed.
Very cool! Where in KSA are you? Are there any women that train with you guys?

Hi! Thanks for the question. I have zero information about this, but according to a comment, you should contact Stefan Zoll on Facebook for info about it in Jeddah, and he may have more info overall.
I’m moving to Saudi Arabia next March and staying there for 2yrs.
So I’ve searched a lot and found out Riyadh Bjj. This is located in Riyadh, capital of Saudi and you can find on facebook. As I know, there’s a black belt master. Anyway I have been very embarraced after knowing I gotta go there for work alone, Everywhere we have teammates and friends, cheer up to myself! (I’ve seen u 2times at Korea Bjj and you are my friend on facebook 🙂 )
Congratulations!! You’ll have to let me know if there is any underground women’s BJJ on the compounds! GOOD LUCK TO YOU!!

Hi Remco, good luck to you! I literally know nothing about BJJ in Saudi.
Cannot find BJJ for women at all within Riyadh however Platinum fighter is the ideal spot for males. The black belt there is world class and competes heavily. If anyone knows of a female Bjj’r please let me know as my wife needs a sparring partner asap. Although still an amateur my wife came 3rd in NZ nationals. Help required please
Hi i know its a long shot but do you know of any jiu jitsu in dammam? Ive looked everywhere and had no luck, thanks, Rod
Hi Rod! I’m so sorry this comment got caught in a black hole. I don’t have an answer, but perhaps someone else (maybe even you!) will. Good luck! Please let us know!
Hi Rod. If you are still looking for a place to train in Dammam, contact Mohammed Alajmi via Facebook. he’s the assistant instructor at the academy in Dammam. I hope you haven’t lost hope!
Well things sure have changed! There are two academies in Riyadh now, Riyadh BJJ with Professor Sergio Fernandes, and Gracie Barra Riyadh, with Professor Thiago Mascaranhas. In Jeddah there are a few MMA gyms as well as Arena which rotates Brazilian black belts every three months. There are also Gracie Barra acdemies (although apparently small) in Jubail, Dahran, and Yanbu. FYI Professor Thiago’s wife is a purple belt and according to hi, available to teach women in Riyadh when she is visiting. Oss.
Thank you for your response! I’m sorry it took over 3 months for me to approve this! I hope you’ll follow the comments on this post. You’re now auto-approved, so your comments will immediately show. I know very little about BJJ in Saudi, so it’s always nice to see “experts” show up here!
Hi… can u tell me which bjj gym in saudi allows woman to train??? It be helping me a lot!
Hi Dyann! I hope you find an answer and post it here!
Hi Dyann! Where are you in KSA? If your are in Riyadh, there is a Portuguese purple belt affiliate with Icon who teaches at a compound in Ishbilia.
Hi Adam,
Do you have contact info for this instructor? I recently moved to Riyadh and I really want to start training again. Please let me know. Thank you!

There used to be some French expats working in Madena who trained together, but I don not know of anyone right now. The closest place for those in Madena is https://www.facebook.com/ZFTeam-BJJ-Yanbu-KSA-106612703067188/ in Jubail. Professor Zuhair was one of best competitors to come out of France in his generation, and I have trained with him a few times when he comes to Riyadh. Best of luck to you.
