In my case, I don’t generally pay much attention to my stripes, because I’m never sure what the criteria are (except at my first school, where I know for a fact it was based on time. That probably colours my perspective on stripes).
Ha- yeah, I can sympathise with that feeling. The thought I might get a purple belt terrified me, to the point where I seriously considered skipping the grading seminar to delay any potential promotion. 😉
I’m still not comfortable with my purple, but I’ve come to accept that I’m probably always going to feel that way about promotions.

For me, it was a scary “your purple belt is looming, woman! Get your butt in gear and improve your jiu jitsu!” Yep, purple belt is a threat to me.
