My Ukrainian roommate does not support me doing BJJ whatsoever. Sometimes I go to BJJ right after work and don’t get home until nearly 10pm, after having left the house at 8am. She is not pleased when I am gone 14+ hours.
As soon as I walk in the door she starts yelling at me, then seeks affection. We snuggle on my bed and I sing to her, reassuring her that I love her so much. Then she gets up and demands I feed her. Right now. Sigh. She wishes I would stay home all day and let her sit in my lap, play with her and pet her.
Did I not explain that my roommate is a cat? 😀
See that cute face? She wants me to be home so she can ignore me!
Other than that cute fuzzy face, my friends and family are supportive. My mom reads my blog, even though she knows NOTHING about BJJ. My friends are excited for me to do BJJ. Even at work they are happy for me, though the one gym rat keeps trying to convince me to go to the gym. NO THANK YOU! I think that mostly my friends are surprised–I’d never shown any interest in sports or physical activities, THOUGH when I was 18-20 I did Tae Kwon Do pretty hardcore–6 days per week. I made it ALMOST to black belt (I THINK that’s red), then money and schedules got too tight and it fell to the wayside.
How about you? Is/are your family/friends/network supportive of your BJJ? Resentful? Understanding? Kinda get it? How do you deal with it?
