When it rains it pours

I write this in a supine position, unable to freely move. I’m a bit embarrassed to admit how it happened. I decided to do some squats–no weights, just a little exercise. I did 2×25 and at the end my back felt REALLY tight, so I stretched it out. Less than an hour later I couldn’t move without extreme pain.

I laid in bed, not even able to turn. When I had to use the bathroom there was crying involved. I took my phone with me in case I fell and couldn’t get up. I got my umbrella out so I could lean on it.

Next day my friend and her boyfriend came over and took me to the ER. There was much more crying as I got into the cab. Transitions were the worst–going from standing to sitting or vice versa. They doped me but even so I could feel the pressure. They x-rayed me but found nothing. They implied an MRI might show the results. They gave me weak meds and dr orders to lay down for 3 days.

The three blessings are that I had friends to help, coworkers to fill in at work and I was already taking time off bjj.

Please help me feel better. Any stupid stories you want to share from your life? I’m stuck in bed here people, please help entertain me!!

Hey Julia! Sorry to hear you are hurt! Get better soon!!

Oh no! Sorry to hear about that: hope it doesn’t take long to heal.

I’m confused how it happened though. I didn’t realise you could do that much damage just from squats. Have you had any problems with you lower back like that before?

Ok, entertain. Hmm. I’m not any good at comedy, so instead I’ll offer up Seanaby. If you haven’t read his work before, he’s done some hilarious MMA-related stuff, like this, this and this.

Also, have a read of this manga, if you haven’t already.

    • Hahaha the 6 least sportsmanlike moves in MMA was my favorite. Especially this line:
“he seemed more annoyed than angry. Almost as if he was explaining to a diabetic child for the fifth time that he’s not allowed to drink jam.”

Not a manga fan at all.

Oh, and no, never had back problems before. Just maybe an age + crappy squats that put too much pressure on my lower back thing.

Are you sure you’re a geek, in that case? ;p

Though yeah, it took me a while to get used to manga, especially reading right to left. Anime is obviously much easier, but there is plenty of great manga out there which hasn’t been adapted yet. I’d recommend you give it another try. :D

      • Slidey I hate manga and hate anime. Seriously can’t stand them and not for lack of trying.

      • slideyfoot says:

Oh yeah, I vaguely remember us having this discussion before. I guess I’m still in disbelief you don’t like anime, as you tick all the boxes (cosplay, martial arts, sci-fi, etc). You even live in Asia! ;p

Danggggg – that sucks! Sorry to hear about that, Jiu-Jiu!

I just got over a herniated disc. I somehow hurt my back while lifting – either deadlifts or squats or both. My injury wasn’t that severe, but the pain was nagging.

Not sure how health care in Korea works, but what are your plans for recovery? I am highly skeptical that it will heal well on its own…

After seeing a physician who prescribed an indefinite amount of rest, I saw a physiotherapist who told me it was a herniated disc and gave me exercises to “move” the disc back into place and to regain strength. (Note the lack of resting in my recovery regimen). I also had some massage therapy that didn’t do anything. I lastly went to a chiropractor who did Active Release Techniques (as it turned into a sharp muscle pain) and some adjustments.

Your pain sounds severe enough that a chiropractor could help you right away. I know a number of people who have had so much back pain they can barely move but a few chiropractic adjustments made all the difference.

Back pain is some of the worst kind of pain. :( Take care of yourself, lady.

As for entertainment, here is a cute story.

I’m not a dr. nor do I have any specialized training in health matters, but I have been dealing with back problems for many years and your injury sounds familiar. IMHO, most doctors don’t know anything about sports injuries or back pain. I would not lay on my back for 3 days. I would force myself to get up and move around just a little bit every 30mins. Your back healing in only a supine position makes recovery take much longer. You want to keep your range of motion. But don’t take my word for it. Research it yourself.

Find a specialist in back injuries and sports medicine. And they don’t necessarily have to be a doctor. There are many other occupations other than M.D.s that have very good knowledge.

Also look into Dry Needling. It helped me alievate my acute symptoms.

Hmm. If I had a serious injury, I would definitely want whoever is treating me to have studied medicine for many, many years at a reputable university. So I would totally disagree.

Unless of course you just mean a physiotherapist or something, rather than alternative medicine (which in my view is simply a euphemism for “totally unqualified medicine”).

      • Yeah – I would say I’d rather go to a sports doctor for an injury than a regular doctor. Or even a physical therapist who deals with these types of injuries. I went to a back doctor, so I should be okay.

    • Ashley says:

Agreed. Regular physicians are the most useless people when it comes to sports injuries. For all of my major injuries, a family doctor has done nothing but waste my time and hinder healing. I have never had a regular physician prescribe anything other than rest for any of my injuries.

I have simply learned from experience that rest for injuries (sprains, over-training, or back pain) is not the most efficient way to heal, nor is healing a guarantee.

Although three days of rest does not seem too silly, you definitely need to be moving around ASAP. I told my physiotherapist that the physician prescribed rest for my back pain. His response? “That’s what we told people with back pain 20 years ago…”

      • Yeah – the back doctor was MUCH more helpful than the ER folks. Grrr.

I have an MRI scheduled for Friday and a consultation with the back doctor after. Once we figure out WHAT it is I’ll be happy to be more proactive. If I’ve torn something or strained something I might make it worse by trying to gently exercise. Laying down is simply the most pain-free option for me right now. But again – I’ll know more tomorrow. And yes, I already have talked to the back doctor about wanting to know some light exercises for strengthening back. :)

    • ACK! Dry needling sounds HORRIBLE!!! ACK! I went to a back doctor and we’re getting me an MRI and consulting afterward. That’s tomorrow. I’ll be sure to post what the results are!
